The basic idea
A hinge moves mainly at the hips while the trunk stays controlled. You use a version of it when you reach for something on the floor. In training, coaches may teach it with no weight before adding a dumbbell or barbell.
What a coach watches
A coach can look at foot position, balance, the path of the weight and whether you can keep the movement comfortable. There is more than one useful stance or range of motion.
Why practise it slowly
A slower first set gives you time to notice where the movement starts and whether the load feels manageable. More weight is not the point of the first attempt.
Make it yours
If the floor is too far away, the weight can start higher. If you have pain or a medical condition, speak to a qualified professional before using this guide as exercise advice.
